The Ultimate Couch Potato

ESPN had a contest this year for the Ultimate Couch Potato. Now, it's not as easy as it sounds. You have to sit in your seat and watch nothing but sports, with one bathroom break every 8 hours, a 5 minute stretching break every hour, and absolutely no sleeping. Guess who won? A woman. So I guess we have a newly crowned Queen of the Couch Potatoes, after sitting in a recliner for 70 hours and 22 seconds...watching nothing but sports...that is my definition of hell.

File this under "Oops!"

Some residents of a small Texas town got a late notice from their electric company, saying they owed 24 billion dollars. And here I was whining about my $100 electric bill. Think I might have actually had a stroke or a heart attack if I had been one of the recipients...

Even better...a New Zealand arborist who got stuck in a tree was slammed into another tree by his rescue team. Methinks they need remedial rescue training? Ow.

And, what "oops" news item would I be remiss in leaving out? Oh yes, the whole Britney Spears ordeal. People, just leave her alone. Maybe then she might be able to finish a stint in rehab? At least that is what I'd like to think. She needs a lot of help. But all the help in the world won't save her from herself. I'd hate to see her succumb to the same fate as Anna Nicole Smith.

Fame. It's a bitch, if you don't know how to handle it.

Weirdest Winter, Ever

You know, seeing that ice storm out in the central plains, stranding everyone in their homes makes me think that it might be good to keep some emergency supplies on hand. Not that I think I'll need them this year (it's going to be in the 50s--again--today), but as our winters in Ohio seem to go in cycles, it might be a good idea. I live in a place that does get snow...and has the equipment to deal with it, but doesn't do a really good job of clearing the roads. One year we got about a foot of snow on Christmas, and it trapped me in my house because I couldn't get my car out. Heaven help us if we ever get anything like they got in Colorado, where the ice was 3 inches thick in some places.

It's just so weird how they got blasted with that, and all we got was rain and warm weather (well, warm for this time of year anyway). Actually, the "warm" weather is causing my allergies to kick in full-time. Allergies in January is really freaky, let me tell you. And, if it's like it is today on my birthday (the 19th), I will definitely be a little freaked out.
